Prompting by voice

Say the prompt you would never bother to type.

An answer is only as good as the brief, and nobody types a minute of background. Say it instead: who it is for, what you have tried, what good looks like. Hold a key or click the microphone, talk, and Dictate Safe types it into ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or any box with a cursor, with the ums taken out. There is nothing to install in any of them.

In a glass phone booth in a busy co-working space, a consultant talks her laptop through a brief
Said out loud. Typed wherever the cursor is.
One proposal, three assistants

The same voice, into every assistant.

A brand consultant in London, one proposal for a family bakery, and whichever assistant suits the job. Each chapter is named after the one she is using, and each starts a different way.

ChatGPT09:40 · the ChatGPT app

A minute of background, not three words

At a window desk in the co-working space, she counts points off on her fingers as she talks the brief through to her laptop
Giveme3optionseachwitharoughbudget,andkeepitfriendly,notsalesy.

The better the brief, the better the first answer, and the background is the part nobody types. She double-taps Fn and says it the way she would brief a colleague: who the client is, what they want, what they can spend, the tone. She presses it once more, and the whole brief lands in ChatGPT’s box with the um gone.

Changing her mind halfway through a sentence

At a long communal table with a printed draft, pen in hand, she talks to her laptop with a wry look
Tellmewheremydraftbreakstheirbrandguide.Keepitto3points.

This time she clicks the microphone on the floating icon. She starts to say 5 points, changes her mind and says 3, and clicks again to stop. With AI cleanup switched on, only the final version is typed: the change of mind is sorted out on her computer before the words reach Claude.

Off by default
Switch AI cleanup on in Settings. Until then, what you say is typed as you said it, ums aside.

Gemini14:15 · Gemini, on the web

A prompt she already has, found with one word

On a green velvet sofa in the afternoon sun, laptop on her knees, she picks a saved prompt with a small smile
One word: check

Some prompts are worth keeping. She clicks Prompts on the floating icon, types check, and picks one that has been on her list since the first day: a sceptical reader, looking for the reason not to agree. The whole prompt is pasted into Gemini, and her draft goes where the brackets are.

  1. Click Prompts on the floating icon
  2. Type a word from the one you want
  3. Click it, and it is pasted where you were typing

35 ready-made prompts are on your list the first time you open it, and over a thousand more come with a license, all stored and searched on your computer. ⌥ P on a Mac or Ctrl + ` on Windows opens the same search from any app.

Said once, asked three times

At the kitchen counter in low golden light, mug in hand, she asks her laptop one last question

One question, and she wants three opinions on it. She holds Fn and asks ChatGPT. Then Copy Last Transcript, in the menu bar, and she pastes the same words into Claude and Gemini. Nothing is said or typed twice.

Where your words go

Your voice stays here. Your prompt goes where you send it.

Your voice

Turned into text on your computer, on the default setup. Nothing about it is sent to us or to a speech company, and you need no account to dictate.

Your prompt

Goes to ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini when you press send, exactly as if you had typed it. What happens to it there is between you and them.

If you choose

With your own cloud key, your recording is sent to the speech provider you chose instead. The app shows which mode it is in at all times, and Offline Lock stops every connection it makes.

23 words a secondHow fast speech turns into text, on the computer.

Questions people ask first
Do I need a plugin or an extension for ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini?
No. Dictate Safe types into whatever has the text cursor: a browser tab, the ChatGPT or Claude desktop app, a document or an email. Nothing is installed inside them.
How do I start and stop?
Hold Fn while you talk and let go when you are done, or double-tap it to start and press it once to stop. Or click the microphone on the floating icon, and click again to finish. Fn is one of the keys you can choose in Settings; on Windows you pick yours there.
Does my prompt stay private?
Your voice does, on the default setup: the speech is turned into text on your computer, and nothing is sent to us. The prompt itself goes to the assistant when you press send, the same as if you had typed it, so what happens to it there is between you and that company.
What if I change my mind halfway through a sentence?
Switch on AI cleanup, and only the final version is typed: “keep it to 5 points, no wait, 3 points” becomes “keep it to 3 points”. It is off by default, runs on your computer and needs 16 GB of memory. On a slower machine, a cloud provider with your own key does the same job.
Can I keep the prompts I use every week?
Yes. 35 ready-made prompts are on your list the first time you open it, over a thousand more come with a license, and you can write your own. Click Prompts on the floating icon, type a word, and the one you pick is pasted where you were typing. They are stored and searched on your computer.
Will it spell my clients’ names right?
Add them to your vocabulary list, and names and terms come out spelled the way you spell them.
Which languages does it understand?
English only. The speech models are English-only, which makes them more accurate at English than multilingual models of the same size.
What does it cost?
One payment for a lifetime license that covers 2 computers, with updates and fixes to the features sold included, while we offer the app. Try 25 dictations first, with no card and no account.

ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini are trademarks of their owners. Dictate Safe is not affiliated with them: it types into them the way it types into any app.
