Types into any app
One thing to know first

It understands English, and only English.

The speech models are English-only, which makes them more accurate at English than multilingual models of the same size. A voice note in Hindi, Marathi, Tamil or any other language will not come out right, so if most of yours are in another language, this is not the tool for them.

What happens to the file

Turned into text on your computer.

Local, the default

Nothing about the file leaves your computer. It is turned into text by the same on-device engine as your dictation.

Cloud, if you choose

If you have added a cloud speech provider with your own key, the Import page says so, and the file goes to that provider like a dictation would.

Deleted means erased

Delete it from History and its text and recording are erased on the computer, with the space they used overwritten.

How do I get a voice note out of WhatsApp?
On your phone, share or export the voice note to your computer, or save it from WhatsApp on the computer. Then drop the file onto the Import page.
Which files can it read?
WhatsApp and Telegram voice notes (.opus and .ogg), Voice Memos and other .m4a recordings, and .mp3, .wav and .flac files.
Can I drop in several at once?
Yes. Drop one file or several. They are turned into text one after another, and each one is kept in History, marked as from a file.
Does it type the text into another app?
No. An imported file is never typed into another app, because nobody is waiting at a cursor for it. Copy its text from the Import page or from History.
Which languages does it understand?
English only. The speech models are English-only, which makes them more accurate at English than multilingual models of the same size, and it means a voice note in another language will not come out right.
Is my voice note uploaded anywhere?
Not on the default setup: the file is turned into text on your computer. If you have added a cloud speech provider with your own key, the Import page says so, and the file goes to that provider like a dictation would.

Yes. Each file you import counts as one of the 25 free dictations, the same as a dictation does.
