How do I use my History, prompts and snippets with the Assistant?

Switch on one setting to ask for your last 10 or 25 dictations. Ask for a saved prompt by name, or have the Assistant make a snippet from a card.

Updated 2026-10-24

Open Settings → Assistant and tasks, switch on Let the Assistant read my recent dictations, then ask the Assistant for your last 10 or 25 dictations. Your saved prompts and snippets need no setting: ask for a prompt by name, or ask it to make a new snippet.

The Assistant is a Beta: it works, and we are still improving it. Tell us what you notice.

#Read my recent dictations

  1. Open Settings → Assistant and tasks. In the Assistant card, switch on Let the Assistant read my recent dictations. It is off by default.
  2. In the chat, ask in words that mean it, such as “read my last 10 dictations”, “show my recent dictations”, “summarise my last 25 dictations” or “what did I tell Mike this morning?”
You should now see

A result appears that says “I read your last 10 dictations.” Each row has the day and time, such as “Today, 8:38 AM”, the app you dictated into and the first words. Show all opens a whole dictation, and Open History takes you to the History page.

  • You get 10 dictations by default. Say “last 25” or “more” for 25. It never reads more than 25, newest first.
  • It reads the words only, never the recording. Dictations you deleted and audio files you imported are left out. It only reads, and it never edits or deletes.
  • A question about them, such as “what did I say about the invoice?”, gets a second reply with the small line “Based on your last 10 dictations”.
  • Ordinary talk about dictation, such as “how do I dictate an email?”, does not read anything.

#Find and use a saved prompt

Ask “find my prompt for cold emails”, “do I have a prompt for meeting notes?” or “show my prompts”. The Assistant lists up to 10 of your own saved prompts, best match first. Each row has Copy, and Open in Prompts is at the top. It searches the prompts in My Palette, never the whole library.

To write with one, say “use my cold email prompt for Jessica at Acme”. The Assistant finds the prompt by its name, puts your own words into its [placeholders], leaves any [bracket] it could not fill, and writes a draft. The tone buttons work on that draft. If several prompts fit, it asks “Which prompt?” and you say the name of the one you want. A prompt longer than 2,800 characters is not used here, so open it in Prompts and copy it from there. See adding a prompt to My Palette.

#Make a snippet by card

  1. Say “make a snippet”, or give both parts at once: “when I say my address, type 100 Main Street, Austin”.
  2. If a part is missing, it asks “What should the trigger words be?” and “What should it type?”
  3. Check the card, which says “I will add a snippet:” with the trigger and what it types. Press Create.
You should now see

The card says “Created. It is on your Snippets page.” and offers Open in Snippets. Undo removes the snippet again, as long as you have not changed it since.

Snippets follow the Snippets page’s rules: a trigger can be up to 80 characters and the text up to 2,000. Ask “show my snippets” to list them. See how to expand short phrases into longer text.

#When it does not work

Reading your dictations is switched off. Switch on "Let the Assistant read my recent dictations" in Settings, Assistant.

Why: The setting is off, so the Assistant opened nothing.

Fix: Switch the setting on in Settings → Assistant and tasks, then ask again.

You have no snippets yet.

Why: Nothing has been saved on the Snippets page.

Fix: Say "make a snippet", or add one on the Snippets page.

You already have a snippet for that phrase.

Why: A snippet with the same trigger exists, whatever the capital letters.

Fix: Pick another trigger, or change the old snippet on the Snippets page.

That prompt is too long to use here. Open it in Prompts and copy it instead.

Why: The Assistant uses prompts of up to 2,800 characters.

Fix: Open the prompt on the Prompts page and copy it from there.

Limits

Your dictations are read only when the Assistant runs on this computer. With a cloud engine you see “Your dictations stay on this computer. To ask about them, switch the Assistant to run on this computer in Settings.” The text of a saved prompt goes to a cloud engine only after you press Send this once on a card. Scratchpad notes and imported audio are never part of what it reads. For the full picture, see the Assistant and your privacy.
