Where are my tasks kept, and can I get a deleted one back?

Tasks live on your computer, are encrypted when you turn encryption on, go into backups, and need no account. Removed tasks stay 30 days.

Updated 2026-10-24

Your tasks are kept on your computer, in the app’s private data folder. Nothing about them is sent to us, and Tasks needs no account. A task you remove stays in Recently removed for 30 days, and you can restore it from there.

#Where the data is

  • Tasks, goals, reminders, categories and notes are stored on this computer. Dictate Safe does not send them to a server, and Tasks works without an account. See where your data is stored on this machine.
  • When you turn on encryption in Settings → Privacy, in the Encryption card, your tasks are stored encrypted along with your history. See how to encrypt your history.
  • Backups include your tasks. Settings → Backup lists the contents as dictations, notes, prompts and tasks, and a restore brings back open, completed and removed tasks with their categories and goals. See how to set up backups.

#Files kept with a task

When you finish a task, the line “Done. How did it go?” has an Attach a file button. Dictate Safe copies each file into its own folder on this computer and leaves your original where it is. A note keeps up to 10 files, each up to 50 MB. Files that would run a program, such as installers and scripts, are refused.

Those copies are not encrypted, and they are not in a backup. A backup keeps each file’s name and size. After a restore on another computer, the file reads “not on this computer” and only its name remains. The small cross on a kept file deletes the app’s copy after asking, and your original stays where it is.

#Completed tasks

Finished tasks move out of the list into Completed. Open it from the three dots at the top right of Tasks, under Completed tasks. The page lists them by month with the note you wrote and their files. The search box, headed “Search completed tasks”, looks in titles, notes and the notes you add when a task is done. The menu on a row has Reopen, which puts the task back in your list.

#Recently removed

Choose Remove in a task’s More menu and the task leaves your list at once. Open the three dots, then Recently removed. The page says “Kept for 30 days, then erased for good.” and each row shows how many days it has left.

  1. Open Tasks, click the three dots and choose Recently removed.
  2. Hover the task and click Restore. Its sub-tasks come back with it.
You should now see

A line says “Restored” and the task name, and the task is back in its section of the list.

Delete now on a row, and Delete all under the list, erase for good after asking. Their question ends “It cannot be undone.” After 30 days the app erases a removed task on its own.

Limits

Tasks stay on the computer where you made them. To bring them to another computer, restore a backup there. Encrypting your history later does not encrypt the files kept with tasks, and the folder those files sit in is private to your user account on the computer.
