Will I lose my history if I uninstall the Microsoft Store version?

Yes, uninstalling the Microsoft Store version removes the app's data folder with the app. Make a backup first and import it after you reinstall.

Updated 2026-10-29

If you installed Dictate Safe from the Microsoft Store, uninstalling it from Windows removes the app’s data folder together with the app. That folder holds your history, recordings, notes, prompts, snippets, vocabulary, settings and the speech and cleanup models you downloaded. Make a backup before you uninstall, and import it after you install again.

This is how Windows treats apps from the Store. A Mac keeps your data when you move the app to the Bin.

#Before you uninstall

  1. Open Settings → Backup and press Set up backups, or press Back up now if you already did. Choose a folder outside the app, such as an external drive or a folder that OneDrive keeps in sync.
  2. Wait for the card titled Backup saved. It says the file was opened again and checked.
  3. Write down your passphrase, or keep it in a password manager. It cannot be recovered.
  4. Uninstall Dictate Safe from Windows, then install it again from the Store.
  5. Open Import, choose the backup, type its passphrase and press Import. See how to restore a backup.
You should now see

The import card lists what was added and ends with “Nothing you had before was changed or removed.”

Limits

Your license does not travel in a backup. After you install again, sign in as described in moving to a new computer.
