Where is my data stored on this machine?
One folder in your account holds history, recordings, notes, prompts, settings, vocabulary, snippets and models; keys and license live in the system keychain.
Everything Dictate Safe keeps is in one folder inside your own user account. Nothing else is written outside it, apart from the backups you ask for, in the folder you choose. Nothing is stored on a server.
#The folder
On a Mac:
~/Library/Application Support/com.vibhaga.dictatesafe/
On Windows:
%LOCALAPPDATA%\com.vibhaga.dictatesafe\
#What is in it
dictatesafe-history.sqlite: every dictation with its text and its recording, and your Scratchpad notes. This is what History, Scratchpad and Insights read.dictatesafe-prompts.sqliteand theprompt-imagesfolder: your prompts, the library, and their pictures.imported-history.sqlite, inside thearchivefolder: a history you brought across from another dictation app, if you did.settings.json: your preferences, in readable text.vocabulary.txtandsnippets.json: the words you taught it, and your snippets.models: the speech and cleanup models you downloaded. This is most of the space it uses.agreement.json: the record that you accepted the license agreement, and which version.backup-prefs.jsonandbackup-state.json: your backup settings, and a record of the backups the app made, if you set backups up. The backups themselves are in the folder you chose.history-key.dskey: if you turned on encryption, a spare copy of its key, locked with your backup passphrase.overlay-icon: your own floating-icon picture, if you chose one.debug.log: the app’s own log of the current session, for fixing problems. It records what the app did, never what you said: where text was involved it keeps the size of it, so a line reads “214 chars / 38 words” and not the sentence. It stays on this computer, and it starts afresh each time the app opens.
#What is not in that folder
Your license and any cloud API keys live in the operating system’s own credential store: Keychain on a Mac, Credential Manager on Windows. Never in settings.json. Settings files get synced and pasted into support messages, and secrets should not travel that way. Backups do not hold your settings, your license or your keys.
Two more items go there if you use the features behind them: your backup passphrase, only if you chose to keep it on the computer, as automatic backups need, and the key to your history, only if you turned on encryption.
#Deleting everything
- Quit the app.
- Delete the folder above.
- Open Keychain Access (Mac) or Credential Manager (Windows), search for
com.vibhaga.dictatesafe, and delete the entries.
Opening the app again is a fresh install: no history, no settings, and guided setup runs again.
Backups you made are not in that folder, so this does not delete them. Delete the files ending in .dsbackup from your backup folder yourself if you want them gone too.
Most of the space is models and recordings. Delete a model you no longer use from the AI Models page, and choose how long recordings are kept in Insights. See how to stop keeping recordings.
Unless you turn on encryption, your history is stored as plain text in that database, protected only by whatever disk encryption you already use, such as FileVault or BitLocker. If you dictate sensitive material, treat the file as sensitive, or encrypt your history.
Deleting the folder does not free the license on our side. If you are moving to a new computer, deactivate the old one from the Devices page of your dashboard first, or it still counts.
