How do I choose which microphone it uses?

Pick one in Settings, General, Microphone or the menu bar icon; left alone, it follows your computer's default input and switches when you plug in a headset.

Updated 2026-09-23

Open Settings → General and pick one in the Microphone row. Left on Follow the system default, Dictate Safe records from whatever input your computer is set to, which is what you want unless you have a headset you always dictate into.

#Two places to change it

  • Settings → General → Microphone, in the app window.
  • The Microphone menu under the Dictate Safe icon in the menu bar, or the notification area on Windows, without opening the window at all.
You should now see

Your next dictation records from the microphone you picked.

#When your microphone is unplugged

If the microphone you chose is not connected, Dictate Safe records from the system default instead, and the Microphone row says so. Your choice is kept, and used again as soon as that microphone is plugged back in. The list updates on its own as devices come and go.

Limits

Another application that has taken exclusive use of a microphone, such as some video call software, can stop Dictate Safe opening it. See Why is nothing typed when I dictate?
