How do I dictate a name like getUserName?

Say "camel case" and then the words: "camel case get user name" types getUserName. Pascal, snake and constant case work the same way.

Say the shape you want, then the words that go in it. "Camel case get user name" types getUserName. Without it you would get get user name, three separate words, which is not a name any language accepts.

#The four shapes

Say thisYou get
camel case get user namegetUserName
pascal case get user nameGetUserName
snake case get user nameget_user_name
constant case max retriesMAX_RETRIES

Those four names are what programmers already call these shapes, so there is nothing new to memorise. Use as many words as the name needs.

#Where the name ends

It ends at the next symbol, and you do not say anything to mark it. Keep talking and the name closes itself:

Say thisYou get
camel case get user name equals value semicolongetUserName = value;
camel case get user name open paren close paren semicolongetUserName();
const camel case user name equals quote hello quote semicolonconst userName = "hello";
You should now see

In the first line the name stopped at "equals". In the second it stopped at "open paren" and the brackets attached to it, which is what a function call needs. Nothing extra was said to end any of them.

#Capital letters look after themselves

The speech engine capitalises the first word of anything you say, so your words often arrive as "Get User Name" whatever you intended. Those capitals are thrown away and the shape you asked for is applied instead. You never need to think about them.

#Mixing shapes in one line

Each casing word only governs the words after it, up to the next symbol, so you can change shape as often as you like in a single breath. Saying snake case user id colon camel case user dot id comma gives user_id: user.id,.

Limits

A name needs something after it. Say "camel case get user name" and stop there, and you get the plain words back, because a casing word with nothing following it is more often someone talking about camel case than naming something. Carry on to the rest of the line, or end it with a semicolon, and it converts.

There is no kebab-case command. Say the words with "hyphen" between them.

Casing does not know about your codebase. It will not match the capitalisation of a name you have used before, and it will not correct a name you said slightly differently the second time.

If a name comes out wrong, the cause is usually the microphone rather than the shape. See why Code Mode typed the wrong symbol, or the full symbol reference.
